5 First Time Wax Questions You're Too Embarrassed To Ask

Your first waxing experience can be nerve-wracking. You've heard the stories and you're just not sure what to expect after you've booked your appointment for a wax. Even after scouring the internet looking for answers to your most embarrassing questions, you're still left wondering what to believe and what you should do before you bare it all on the waxing table. If this sounds like you, there's great news. You're not alone, and those questions are actually not embarrassing at all, they are more common than you think.

The truth is, we've seen it all, we've heard it all and we've answered it all. But if it is going to put your mind at ease, our wax pros will answer all your first-time questions and make sure you are fully informed and completely comfortable. If you want answers before you book your first-time wax, you're in luck, we're outlining the top 5 most common first-time wax questions that you're just too shy to ask.

Question #1- “How much will waxing hurt?

Man or woman, there’s absolutely no shame in disclosing your pain tolerance level to your waxing professional. Although everyone's threshold for pain is different, you may experience slight discomfort during your first waxing experience. During the wax session the wax is applied directly to the skin and pulled with force removing the hair from the follicle, this process triggers your nerve endings and causes the instant shock of pain. The good news is that the pain subsides in a matter of seconds and the process gets much better and even painless with consistent treatments.

If you want to avoid the feeling of discomfort all together we recommend that you stop by your local Depil Brazil or visit our website for a gentle, natural skin exfoliant. Exfoliating the areas to be waxed prior to your scheduled appointment will make your first visit much easier and our products are formulated to work in tandem with our wax, so you can be confident that you are treating your skin to the absolute best all around. Also, ladies, it's best to try to avoid getting waxed less than five days before your period since your skin is extra sensitive during that time and your pain tolerance is lower.

Question #2 - “Should I shave some of the hair before my wax?”

Please, whatever you do, do not pick up the razor. Even if you think there's "too much" hair, do not shave or trim the wax area before your appointment. If you trim prior to waxing you risk cutting your hair too short, scratching or nicking your skin, which can lead to ingrown hair or infections around the waxed area, not to mention you will have less than perfect results if you try to do it yourself. Cutting your hair too short can also cause the service to be more painful as it is harder to remove the shorter hair and your wax pro will have to attempt the process multiple times as short hair makes it difficult for the wax to grab and remove.

Equally important, you want to make sure that if you DO get the urge to shave or trim the hair wait a week or so to book your appointment. Your hair should be ¼ – ½ of an inch long. When the hairs are shorter than a quarter of an inch, they tend to break in half instead of being removed from the roots, which can also cause irritation and ingrown hairs. The longer the hair is, the better the results will be. At Depil Brazil we have clippers on hand so our wax pros will be able to trim down any extra hair if necessary.

Question #3 - “Can I get waxed while on my period?”

You may have heard that you can't get waxed on your period, but you can indeed get a Brazilian wax during your menstrual cycle as long as you wear a tampon. Although, remember your skin is usually more sensitive during that time of the month so you are likely to experience more pain or discomfort during your session.  All of our wax pros are thoroughly trained & licensed and will make you feel comfortable and at ease during the entire process. If you are getting waxed during your time of the month remember to clean the area thoroughly before your appointment. Wear a fresh tampon and go when your period is the lightest for a worry-free waxing session during your period.

It is also very common for some guests to experience the start of their menstrual cycle during a session, if this ever happens, worry not. Our guests will find fresh tampons at each Depil Brazil studio, as well as wipes in the restrooms, all available at no charge to make sure you feel clean, comfortable and ready to enjoy your wax.

Question #4 - “How long do I have to wait after my wax before I can....you know?”

Although we know your partner will love your smooth new look as much you do, while it’s usually said that you should wait at least 12-24 hours before you engage in any type of physical exercise, the wax at Depil is specially formulated to keep your area smooth, sanitary, and exfoliated while allowing you to keep your routines. If desired, same day intercourse is completely fine after a wax from Depil Brazil. However, it is recommended that you wait a few hours and remember to clean the area thoroughly after intercourse. Our Sao Conrado intimate wash and Joatinga cleanser works to prevent any bacteria and discomfort. Our Barra brightening cream also helps reduce the appearance of any dark spots or effects of hyperpigmentation in even your most intimate areas so you can feel smooth and confident during the day and even behind closed doors.

Question #5 - “What do I do once the hair starts to grow back?

After your first wax, the results can last 3 to 6 weeks depending on the individual’s hair re-growth. In most cases, hair growth is minimal during the first week or two and noticeably increases in the third and fourth week. Heat stimulates hair growth, therefore hair grows quicker in the summer than in the winter. However, with regular waxing, the length of time between treatments will increase. Aftercare is extremely important for anyone who gets a wax. You should exfoliate the skin at least once per week, and moisturize daily. This will help your results look their best longer. Although the hair growth pattern is different for everyone, you can reduce the appearance of regrowth by using our slow growth kit as described. Our Leblon Slow Grow Lotion, and our Leme Slow Grow Wash delays the hair growth while cleansing and nourishing beautifully soft, smooth, moisturized skin. With regular use of our slow growth duo, your hair will grow back weaker, finer, and lighter. Once your hair grows back ¼ – ½ of an inch, it is time to book your next appointment.

Regardless of your experience with waxing, there’s no need to feel uncomfortable asking questions about what you should expect or how to follow up with care between your appointments. In fact, it’s recommended that you do so the expert can give you some tips on making your waxing treatment a success.
